My Textile Life

Loom
Basket Braids
Woven Bkues

"From ‘Dyeing in a Plastic Bag’ to weaving exquisite textiles, Helen’s life has always been full of colour."

I studied textiles in the early sixties at teacher training college and taught for many years finally as head of Textiles at Treloar College in Alton.

Through the eighties patchwork was the thing and this was when I began exploring dyeing my own fabrics.

Always having a love of colour this gave me the opportunity to produce unique wall hangings.

In 2000, having finally retired from teaching in schools, I opened my studio in Grayshott and began writing my first book. ‘Dyeing in Plastic Bags’

Other books soon followed and, because of their popularity,  I travelled to Europe and America as well as all over the UK teaching and lecturing.

In about 2007 having visited my son in Australia I was led, rather reluctantly I have to say, into the wonderful world of spinning and weaving.

Wow! I couldn’t believe how much I loved weaving, it was as though at last I had found my medium. After a few years trying to fit in my new passion around teaching and talks I Decided to give everything up and just stay in my studio and weave - what joy!

I have now returned to some teaching, which I love and eventually missed. I just enjoy sharing my passion and hopefully inspiring other people to follow their own rainbows.
